Ours was drifting warm every afternoon. He cleaned a condenser packed solid with corrosion product, measured the temperature split again afterwards, and only then said whether anything further was needed.
Ice maker not working: arm, water, filter and cold before any parts
Five checks for a Viking ice maker that has stopped, in the order they fail: signal arm and modes, water valve and line, filter age, freezer temperature, then jams and worn parts.
With the bin out, the signal arm and the ice mold are in plain view, so a raised arm or a frozen clump is easy to spot.
Ice maker not working: arm, water, filter and cold before any parts
When a Viking ice maker is not working, check five things in this order: the signal arm is down, the water valve feeding the unit is open and its line is not kinked or dripping, the water filter is not overdue, the freezer is genuinely cold, and no clump of ice is jamming the mold or the bin. Those checks need a flashlight, a thermometer and about twenty minutes. If all five pass and the bin is still empty a day later, the fault sits in the water valve, the ice maker module or the cooling, and that is the point to book a technician.
Is the ice maker switched on at all?
The wire signal arm, which Viking also calls the bale arm, is the on switch. Down means make ice; raised means stop. On a 5 Series built-in the arm has to be lifted until it clicks before Sabbath mode can start, so a household that keeps the Sabbath, or a guest exploring the buttons, may have left it up. If SAB is showing on the display, leave Sabbath mode first and then lower the arm.
Integrated columns have a different trap called showroom mode. Holding VAC and ALARM together for 3 seconds turns it on or off, and while it is active the lights work but the controls, temperature regulation included, do nothing.
Also look at the calendar. A new installation needs a day or two before the first cubes fall, as the questions below spell out. After a long absence, dump the first 5 Series drawer made once the machine wakes up, which matters in a beach house that stays shut for part of the year.
Water: valve, line and pressure
No water, no ice. Find the shut-off valve for the refrigerator, often under the sink or behind a panel beside the unit, and make sure it is fully open. Then check for drips or a damp floor near the toe-kick. A built-in that was rolled out and pushed back, say after new flooring, can pinch its supply line flat. Moving one safely is a job in itself, as our page on built-in access and clearance explains.
Pressure matters too. Viking asks for a 1/4-inch copper line at 20 to 120 psi on its FDREIC integrated all-refrigerators. A well pump that cycles low or an under-sink reverse-osmosis system can fall short, and the mold then fills slowly or not at all.
The filter nobody remembers changing
A clogged cartridge starves the fill long before the dispenser stops completely. Intervals depend on the model:
- Older built-ins covered by manual F20413, such as VCSB423 and VCBB363: replace every nine months or after 750 gallons, whichever arrives first, then run the dispenser for three minutes.
- RVFFR336 French-door: cartridge RWFRVFFR every 6 months.
- FDREIC, FDFZIC and FDBMIC7360: rated for up to 3,000 litres (792.6 gal) and a maximum of 12 months; the FDREIC uses RWFIC.
A new cartridge holds air, so expect sputtering and a slow first fill.
The freezer has to be cold enough
An ice maker will not begin a cycle until its mold is well below freezing, and after a power cut Viking says reaching that point can take overnight. Put a thermometer in the freezer; about 0°F is the usual goal. If the freezer itself is warm, the missing ice is a symptom rather than the fault: look at condenser dust, a blocked toe-kick grille, a tired fan or a frosted evaporator. Salt air near the beaches also eats condenser fins faster than it does inland.
Jams, clumps and a bin that only looks full
Slide the bin out. Cubes that thawed and refroze into one block can prop the arm up or bind the auger, and one cube wedged in the ejector blocks the next harvest. Break up the block, dry the bin, and push it fully home.
Undercounter clear-ice machines
The FGIM5151 is a separate machine that wants its ice-making system cleaned once a year at minimum, twice if you can manage it. Half a year of running switches on the Time to Clean light, and only a completed cleaning turns it off. Scale left in place slows output well before it stops. Coverage differs on these machines as well; see Viking warranty, and ours.
When to call, and what it usually costs
Book a visit when every check above passes and the bin is still empty after a full day, when the inlet valve buzzes but nothing fills, when the mold fills but never releases, or when water shows under the unit. The diagnostic is $80. If the cause is a refrigeration fan or the defrost system, the typical range is $240–$640, while compressor or sealed-system work typically runs $980–$2,470; the firm figure follows the diagnosis. Have the serial number ready, and see our Viking refrigerator repair page for what a visit involves.
Follow-ups
How long does a new Viking ice maker take to make ice?
Longer than most owners expect. A 5 Series built-in needs 24 to 48 hours after installation, and its first three full drawers go in the sink. An integrated freezer ice maker begins 12 to 24 hours after activation and then turns out roughly 10 cubes every two hours, so a sparse bin on day one is normal, not a fault.
Do I need to reset anything after changing the water filter?
Usually, or the reminder stays lit. On the RVFFR336, hold Alarm Off for 3 seconds; on models that take RWFDISP, press the lit FILTER button. Integrated FDREIC, FDFZIC and FDBMIC7360 units show Replace filter again 12 months after the reset. Run water through the dispenser to purge trapped air before judging the ice maker.
Is a broken Viking ice machine covered by warranty?
It depends on the product and its age, so find the serial number and purchase date first. Stand-alone ice machines fall in Viking’s undercounter and wine refrigeration category, where sealed-system coverage is parts and labor in years 3 through 6 only, with none of the parts-only years 7 to 12 that built-in and integrated refrigeration receives.
What does a repair cost, band by band?
Parts and labour together, in the bands these jobs land in. The $80 diagnostic comes off the bill when you approve the work, and the firm figure is written down after the fault is proved.
| Work | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic visit | $80 |
| Refrigeration fan or defrost system | $240–$640 |
| Compressor or sealed-system repair | $980–$2,470 |
| Control board or touch panel | $390–$930 |
The appliances this affects
Built-in and freestanding refrigeration. Sealed-system faults, ice maker fill valves, defrost and fan faults, condenser corrosion on the coast, and door hardware.

Six causes of a warm Viking refrigerator in the order to rule them out: showroom mode and settings, airflow, condenser, door gaskets, fans and defrost, then the sealed system.
Cabinet openings, countertop overhangs, rails, weight and the connections at the back decide how long a built-in repair takes. None of it is visible from the front, which is why we look at the installation before quoting.
Salt aerosol packs condenser fin stock, seizes fasteners and eats hinge pins. The symptoms mimic a refrigerant fault, which is how coastal owners end up quoted for sealed-system work they do not need.
What customers said afterwards
4.8 out of 5, across 90 customer reviews. Every one is a single visit, in the words of the person whose kitchen it happened in.
The evaporator fan screeched every time the door shut. He showed us the worn bearing before he replaced it, then checked airflow through both compartments once the cabinet had run for a while.
Ours held temperature but hummed loudly at night. He isolated the evaporator fan, found a bearing dry and the blade rubbing its shroud, and replaced the assembly. Quiet again, though it took a second trip for the part.
