The rotisserie motor had seized solid with salt. He replaced the motor and the spit bearings, then showed me the cover we had been leaving off after the grill cooled. Straight advice rather than a sales pitch.
Viking outdoor grill repair
Built-in and cart grills. Burner burn-through, igniter and valve failure, rotisserie motors, and the corrosion that coastal salt air puts into every fastener.
Outdoor burners fail the same way indoor ones do, only faster: corroded ports, a tired electrode and a valve that has taken a season of weather.
What you are seeing, and what it usually is
Described from the owner's side. No invented error codes. Where we are not certain of a cause we say what we check rather than guess.
| Observed | Usually | The work |
|---|---|---|
| Burner lights at one end and dies along its length | Burn-through or blocked ports. Outdoor burners corrode from the inside as well as the outside in this climate. | Remove the burner, inspect for perforation, clear the ports, replace if the tube is holed. |
| Igniter clicks with no spark, or sparks with no light | Cracked electrode ceramic, a wet igniter box, or a corroded ground path. Grounding is the usual culprit outdoors. | Dry and clean the electrode, verify the ground, check the module or battery, replace the electrode if the ceramic is cracked. |
| Flames uneven across the grate, hot spot at the front | Flame tamers or radiants collapsed or out of position, or a burner running lean. | Replace the tamers, verify orifice size against the gas supply, check manifold pressure. |
| Knob seized or snapping off | Valve stem corroded solid. Salt air plus grease plus infrequent use is the exact recipe. | Free or replace the valve, treat the manifold, and set a rinse-down routine for a coastal install. |
| Rotisserie motor hums or stalls under load | Worn motor bushings or a bent spit. The motor is rated for a specific load and a heavy bird finds the limit. | Test the motor unloaded, check the spit for run-out, replace the motor if it stalls at rated load. |
| Grill will not reach temperature on LP | Regulator in bypass after the tank was opened too fast, or a genuinely low tank. | Reset the regulator by the correct sequence, verify tank level and pressure, replace the regulator if it will not reset. |
How we approach it
An outdoor appliance in a coastal subtropical climate
An outdoor grill is a gas appliance that lives outside, in humidity, in salt aerosol, in afternoon rain, and is often used ten times a year. That combination is harder on hardware than daily use would be.
The physics is simple. A grill that runs hot stays dry. A grill that sits idle for six weeks collects moisture in the burner tubes and on the manifold. Add salt in the air within a few miles of the ocean and every steel fastener becomes a future extraction job. In 32082, 32250, 32266, 32233 and 32084 we plan for seized hardware on every visit and carry the drill-out kit as standard.
Burners
Burner tubes fail from the inside. Combustion moisture and food acids attack the tube wall, and once a section perforates the flame pattern collapses along the length. The symptom is a burner that lights near the igniter and dies further down.
There is no repair for a perforated burner. It is a replacement, and it is a genuine OEM replacement, because the venturi throat and the orifice have to match or the burner will run lean and lift off. Generic burners are the reason we get called back to grills somebody else already worked on.
Ignition outdoors
Indoors, ignition faults are about the electrode. Outdoors, they are about grounding and moisture. The spark needs a clean path to the burner body, and corrosion at the mounting bracket breaks that path silently. Everything looks right, the module clicks, and no spark appears. Cleaning the ground is a five-minute fix that a lot of people replace a module to avoid.
Valves and knobs
The valve stems on an outdoor manifold are the most exposed moving parts on the appliance. Salt and grease combine into something that sets like a soft cement. The first sign is a knob that needs two hands. The second is a knob that comes off in one. Once the stem is seized, forcing it will shear it.
Free the valves once a season by simply cycling every knob through its full travel, even in the months when you are not grilling. It costs nothing and prevents most of these calls.
What we recommend for a coastal install
Rinse the exterior with fresh water after any wind-driven salt event. Use a cover, but only on a cold grill and only a breathable one, because a sealed cover on a coastal patio traps humidity against the steel. Cycle the knobs monthly. Have the burners pulled and inspected annually rather than waiting for a failure.
Built-in islands
A cart grill can be wheeled out and worked on from every side. A built-in grill in a stone or stucco island can only be reached from the front, through whatever access door or drawer bank the mason left.
Most islands are built correctly and the grill slides forward on its rails far enough to reach the manifold, the valves and the igniter box. Some are not. We have found grills mortared in with no access opening at all, where the only route to the burners is to lift the unit out through the top, and that is a job involving the countertop.
We look at the island before we start and tell you what is reachable and what is not. If a repair needs access the island does not provide, you get that answer at the diagnostic rather than halfway through a job.

Asked on most of these calls
My grill lived through five summers and everything is seized. Is that normal here?
Within a few miles of the ocean, yes. Salt aerosol settles on the manifold, the fasteners and the burner tubes. A freshwater rinse of the exterior and a cover between uses buys years.
Do you replace burners with generic parts?
No. We fit genuine OEM burners. Generic burner tubes rarely match the venturi and orifice geometry, and a mismatched burner runs lean or lifts.
The grill is built into a stone island. Can it still be serviced?
Usually yes, from the front, once the drawer or access door is out. If the island was built without an access opening we will tell you what is reachable before we quote.
Often the same call
$80 flat diagnostic, credited toward the repair. One diagnostic covers the visit, not the appliance, so if two machines are down say so when you book.
Sealed burners, spark modules, oven temperature drift and the door hinges that carry a 40-pound door. 30, 36, 48 and 60 inch ranges, gas and dual fuel.
Built-in and freestanding refrigeration. Sealed-system faults, ice maker fill valves, defrost and fan faults, condenser corrosion on the coast, and door hardware.
Wall, island and professional hoods with internal, inline or remote blowers. Motor and speed control faults, lighting, baffle and duct problems, make-up air diagnosis.
Areas where we see this most
Ranked by how much this appliance's failure pattern overlaps what the housing stock, the exposure and the age of the equipment there actually do. 40 miles by road of Fruit Cove, St. Johns County.
Coastal, so salt takes condensers, hinge pins and fasteners. The housing spans four decades and most of the older kitchens have been remodelled twice, which decides the access.
Three service environments in one city. Modern openings at Palencia, salt corrosion on the coastal side, and a historic core with kitchens never laid out for modern equipment.
Corrosion territory. Salt aerosol takes condensers, hinge pins and fasteners here, and the older beach houses put appliances in enclosures that were built around them.
Background on this fault
Salt aerosol packs condenser fin stock, seizes fasteners and eats hinge pins. The symptoms mimic a refrigerant fault, which is how coastal owners end up quoted for sealed-system work they do not need.
Spark modules fire every electrode on the manifold together, so a single fouled burner sounds like a whole-cooktop failure. Here is how to find the one that is at fault.
What customers said after a outdoor grills visit
4.8 out of 5, across 47 customer reviews. Every one is a single visit, in the words of the person whose kitchen it happened in.
Flames leapt up the back of the grill whenever the fat pan filled. He found the drain path blocked solid and a burner shield warped out of position, cleared the run and fitted a new shield. Safe to use again.
Our outdoor grill lit on one side only after a wet summer. He found the crossover tube corroded through and both igniters gone, replaced the lot and coated the fasteners so the next set comes out again.
